a portait of [country] 2019 - ongoing.
These images of country were difficult places to find, to see at all. To be truly understood, they demanded first a prolonged physical exertion, followed by lingering solitude, sometimes for days. A practice in patience. A longing to let go, to shed impediments and false notions cultivated from having lived away from land.
A rediscovered vulnerability and openness. A new receptivity.
Magical places, devoid of colonial presence, are rare. Hence, sadness permeates. All the scars, the disruption and the dispossession, exist in the works. The paddocks, the towns and cities, the underground, the polluted waterways and the air, all come knocking just outside the frame.
Yet, these lands where the earth hums, are all our future, precious and precarious. They still act as if one walks in lockstep on holy land. The terrain feels pure, is pure, and demands respect and reverence.
